These are made from reclaimed Scottish slate which has a lovely deep blue colour. Just collected these a few weeks ago from a dismantled shed/garage.

Reclaimed Marble Chopping/Pastry Boards

Once a broken marble fireplace…but after the Hatch, Burn, Carve treatment, now a marble chopping/pastry board!

DSC08250

Hand cut with an angle grinder (boy, that was fun!).
I have two of these for sale, each one approx 35 x 24 cm.

Both now SOLD! I’m on the look out for more broken marble though….let me know if you have any and I can buy it from you (and/or make a board in return).

Rose Cottage

A recent house name commission- this was carved into a piece of reclaimed snooker table base.

DSC07339

The customer wanted a Charles Rennie Mackintosh design- with a classic CRM rose (of course!).

Here it is in the process of being hand-enamelled in the studio;

I can courier these UK wide for approximately £11 (depending on your location). PM me here, or email hatchburncarve@yahoo.co.uk

Black Barony House Sign

Here’s another recent house sign. The folks at this house have bats roosting there- hence the design! This was made from a reclaimed Cornish roof slate.

Custom Made House Sign

My own custom design (bees © Hatch, Burn, Carve/Martin Wilson), hand-carved into a section of reclaimed slate fireplace and hand enamelled.

This is the starting material and my original design;

The customer and myself were really pleased with the final piece! Here’s the slate after carving and before enamelling;

Award-Winning Art

This was my entry to a recent competition run by the Eastgate Theatre and Arts Centre in Peebles- the theme was simply ‘fish’. It won first prize.

DSC07150

Taking the three fish from the town crest and motto of Peebles where the competition and exhibition was held, I decided to re-interpret the classic Pictish salmon of knowledge adding movement and flow to the designs. Each fish was hand carved onto a piece of reclaimed Scottish purple variegated slate (these came from a local roof which was approximately 200 years old). I made the frame using a combination of East Lothian driftwood and reclaimed sarking (roofing) boards.

DSC07145

Each of the slate pieces used to create the stream were hand cut and selected to give the impression of flow around the fish. This was a time-consuming process, but worth it for the end result.

This piece is now sold, however, I am currently working on some new art pieces as well as the more craft-based bespoke items which I create.
Finally, I wish to thank Belinda for her continued support and ‘Stream of Knowledge’ is dedicated to the memory of my mum.
