Landing II

‘Landing II’ (34 x 19 cm, © HatchBurnCarve).

A commission based on my original ‘Landing’ design, but the customer wanted a piece they could hang on their wall. Designed from images of corvids captured in the Scottish Borders, East Lothian and Cornwall.

Carved using a variety of diamond, tungsten and Foredom CeramCut Blue carving burrs (from 0.5 to 3.2 mm) as well as traditional hammer and chisel).

After material removal with hammer and chisel, and starting to carve texture into the background;

Making Carved Crow Plaques

During the making of these two crow plaques, I documented the process of creating the pieces from reclaimed roofing slates. Hover over each image (or click to view full screen) for a short description of each stage. This was a time consuming process involving two machining stages to prepare the material, nine sanding and polishing stages and three different carving processes.

The designs (©HatchBurnCarve) were drawn from photographs of crows I had taken in the Scottish Borders and Cornwall (hence naming the pieces ‘Corvus Alba’ and ‘Corvus Belerion’). The plaques were enamelled with two coats of monument/memorial enamel (brass for Corvus Alba and gold for Corvus Belerion) before a final polish and a very light coat of slate sheen. A D-ring hanger was attached to the reverse of each (using ‘Gorilla Weld’ epoxy) and felt protective feet added to prevent these marking any walls.

‘Corvus Alba’ (21 cm x 11 cm x 7 mm, ©HatchBurnCarve). Sold.

‘Corvus Belerion’ (16 cm x 15 cm x 7 mm, ©HatchBurnCarve). Listed for sale in my Etsy shop- follow this link.

Uru-Anna Orion Plaques

Another four of my ‘Uru-Anna’ plaques (design © HatchBurnCarve) that I sent to Kilmartin Museum Shop (number XI to XIV in an open-ended series).

This cup and ring design is based on the Orion constellation and influenced by the rock art found in Kilmartin Glen. I make these regularly to keep up with demand (these four sold within a matter of weeks) and some are occasionally available to buy from my Etsy shop (or you can order direct- please use the contact form, or email hatchburncarve@yahoo.co.uk).

Cat memorial (40 x 25 cm). Design ©HatchBurnCarve.

Bobcat

I was asked to create a bobcat design to be used as both a carving template and also to feature as a logo on ice hockey shirts.

The design (©HatchBurnCarve) was carved into a 25 x 25 cm piece of reclaimed slate. Following freehand carving, this was hand polished to a mirror-like finish and enamelled using professional gold and white monument/memorial enamels;

My design was then expertly transformed into a print by Team Xpress, based in Pickerington, Ohio.  These jerseys are now worn by the ‘Bobcats’ team that play in the Perani’s Pond Hockey League at their games in Columbus, Ohio.
